Design Philosophy: Designing for Emotion

"Before you can successfully apply color theory to interior design, you have to understand how it works."- Michelle Pollak

As a designer, I use color as a tool to appeal to the emotion received from a space. Color is one of the most important aspects to consider when designing a space because each individual color has a different psychological effect on each person. It is important to know what your clients personal preferences are and if the chosen color scheme is going to accommodate to their certain need. It is also important to tie in the color scheme to what the space is going to be used for, for example, when picturing food, most people think of warm colors, therefore using a warm color scheme in a kitchen to promote the feeling of being hungry.

Using neutral colors in the majority of a space and incorporating accent colors with decorative pillow, flowers, rugs, art, etc. this is the most appealing method when designing for emotion. This is because there is not an overload of color causing one to be irritable, but there is just enough color to make the space feel usable and enjoyable to be in. For example, if I were to step into a room where the majority/whole of it was white, I would feel as if I should no be there or use that room because I would soil the prevailing feeling of pristine and purity that the space encompasses.

I hope to effect people on an emotional level when designing so that, not only can they enjoy the space, but so that they will remember it and want to incorporate the design technique I used in their lives.

This picture is an example of how using too much of a color is overstimulating to the eye.

This is a picture I took of my room to show a combination of colors that are not under or overwhelming.

This sketch shows the use of a warm color scheme in a kitchen to encourage the feeling of being hungry.

  2. I appreciate the philosophy ideology. It establishes a necessary aspect of design. My one suggestion is maybe doing something else with the text instead of white backgrounds.

  3. I enjoyed reading your design philosophy. I strongly agree with you when it comes to using neutral colors. It definitely creates a clean and simple look and less is more. I agree with Kyle with the change of text suggestion.
